The Best Home Decor Apps

Jessica Richardson Remodeling

After I bought my first house I poured through decor magazines like it was my job, cutting out everything I loved and saving it in my “inspiration binder.”   I never felt this way about my condo but there was something about having my own house that made me feel like the decorating possibilities were endless.

I still have that binder and it’s now interesting to see how my taste has changed, or shall I say evolved, over the past decade.  I was all about French Country back then and now I prefer more of a mix of modern and traditional.

My days of magazine cutting reached an abrupt halt when I discovered Houzz -It’s been my go-to resource for numerous redecorating and remodeling projects.

Following the inception of  Houzz a whole new crop of home decor apps have emerged, making your home improvement and decorating projects easier than ever.

Here are some of the best new mobile apps:

Color Capture: This fun app from Benjamin Moore’s  allows you to snap a picture of any color inspiration you see and it will match that color to as exactly as possible to one of its 30,000 paint colors available for purchase.

Like That Decor: when you see a piece of furniture you like take a snap it and this app will find similar or less expensive furniture from thousands of top stores. Search any image to quickly find decor you like

The Ikea Catalog: Makes measuring tapes a thing of the past.  Ikea just updated its app with a new augmented reality feature that allows you to virtually place the brand’s furniture in your room to see how it will look.

Mark on Call: Create and experiment with your own floor plans on this app to stay organized when building or remodeling a home. It will replicate exact measurements: you can also take pictures of finishes, fabrics, rugs, and flooring to “skin” them onto virtual surfaces. You won’t even need a designer for your next big project.

Design*Sponge: One of my favorite websites has finally created a mobile app that allows users to easily access directions to thousands of DIYs and makeovers as well as look for decor inspiration.

ihandy carpenter:  From measuring to leveling, Carpenter provides you with every tool you’ll ever need. Tools include a protractor, surface level, bubble leveler

Houzz: This super popular website has a mobile app as well. Browse hundreds of home decor photos for inspiration and connect with professionals in your area.
