Christmas day is a wonderful time to spend with family, sitting around the fireplace, watching Christmas themed movies and football. Many will even stay in their pajamas all day. But if you have out-of-town guests who want to be entertained, or you just want to get out for while, here are a few activities to consider on Christmas day:
The US Botanic Garden The annual holiday show, Season’s Greenings, features thousands of blooms from exotic orchids and poinsettia varieties. In celebration of the National Park Service’s 100th Anniversary and the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act, there will be a large indoor tree decked out with ornaments from all the national parks. A model train will chug through the plant-based recreations of iconic national parks and historic places such as the Grand Canyon, Old Faithful Inn, the Gateway Arch, Mount Vernon, the Statue of Liberty, and many more. In the Garden Court, there’s a collection of D.C. landmarks, all made from natural materials. The US Botanic Garden is located at 100 Maryland Ave SW, near the Capitol in Washington DC. It’s free and open from 8am to 5pm.
The Kennedy Center will be open on Christmas Day. The Millennium Stage will host the 18th annual All-Star Christmas Day Jazz Jam at 6 pm. The Millennium Stage provides a variety of free entertainment all year but on Christmas Day, it’s all about Jazz. It’s become a tradition for many so be sure to arrive early for a seat.The play Into The Woods is on stage at the Kennedy Center. Tickets are still available for Christmas evening. Mount Vernon Estates is a fabulous place to visit on Christmas Day. You can tour the mansion, watch historic chocolate-making demonstrations and visit with Aladdin the Camel. For more details and ticket prices, click here.
ICE at the Gaylord National Resort The theme this year is Christmas Around the World ~ exploring holiday traditions from around the globe. Be sure to dress warmly, the hand-carved ice sculptures are kept at a chilly 9 degrees. Coats will be provided if needed.
