If, like most people in the DC area, you’ve been vacationing for the past two months – you may have missed it, but this summer Pentagon City became just a little more happening. The grand opening of a remarkable new Whole Foods and popular restaurants Matchbox and Shake Shake are definitely cause for celebration.
Let’s start with the Whole Foods on South 12th St – It is pretty amazing and better than any Whole Foods I know of in the area. It reminded me of the flagship store in Austin, TX. Clearly catering to the Pentagon lunch crowd, the prepared foods section is a welcome smorgasbord. There is a huge cheese department complete with a fresh pasta bulk section, hot prepared barbecue and side dishes, the salad bar(s) along with the hot bars, followed by a made-to-order ramen concept, freshly made pizzas and finally a wine bar. After filing up on the noshes there is ample seating on two floors. There is also plenty of garage parking.
Next is the uber popular Matchbox restaurant known for its delicious pizzas, sliders, salads and cocktails. The DC based chain that began in Penn Quarter and recently opened locations in other major cities just opened at The Fashion Center at Pentagon City, right next to the Ritz Carlton.
Shake Shack, the NYC fast casual restaurant that began during the Madison Square Garden renovation and IPO’d last year also just opened directly across from Matchbox at the Fashion Center’s entrance.
These new additions are exciting for Pentagon City and more development is underway – including some significant residential projects and also a Sweet Green scheduled to open later this year.
